Frequently Asked Questions About Unminifying
Everything you need to know about minification, code reverse-engineering, and formatting.
Minification removes comments, line breaks, and unnecessary spaces from source code to reduce file transfer size and improve website speed. Unminifying (or beautifying) does the reverse: it analyzes the syntax tokens and restores proper indentation, spacing, and line breaks so that developers can read, debug, and understand the code.
If the original code was only minified (whitespace and comments stripped), all function and variable names remain intact. If the code was also mangled (e.g. via Terser or UglifyJS where variables became
a, b, c), an unminifier formats the syntax and control flow cleanly, but the original descriptive variable names can only be restored if a corresponding .map (source map) file is available.
Many minified scripts use Dean Edwards' famous Packer, which wraps the entire script in an
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d)...) payload. Our tool includes an automated unpacker that de-encodes these packed strings back into raw JavaScript before beautifying it.
Yes, absolutely. The unminify engine operates 100% locally on your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your confidential source code, API payloads, or client scripts never leave your machine and are never uploaded to any external server.
You can press Ctrl + Enter (or Cmd + Enter on macOS) while inside the input textarea to trigger instant beautification.
